Directions to Whitewater Mesa Labyrinths
We are located in southwest New Mexico, 70 miles north of Silver City. We are 4 hours drive from Albuquerque, NM or Tucson, AZ or El Paso, TX.
The most beautiful drive is from Albuquerque. Go south on I 25 to Socorro, turn right on Rt. 60 through Magdalena to Datil, turn left at the flashing light in Datil onto Rt. 12 for Reserve, turn right at the flashing light and gas station in Reserve staying on Rt. 12 until you T-junction with Hwy 180. Turn left onto Hwy 180 and go south through Alma [a gas station, store and restaurant on the left.] Go about a mile to Rt. 159 and turn left towards the ghost town of Mogollon, Willow Creek and the Gila Wilderness. There is a brown Historic Marker sign on the east side of Hwy 180 where you turn onto Rt. 159.
If you are coming from the south on Hwy 180, go through Glenwood and go for 3 miles on Hwy 180 and turn right onto Rt. 159.
Stay on Rt. 159 , the paved road aka Bursum Road, and drive up the winding road [a 1,500 foot elevation climb.] When you cross the cattle guard at the top you will be on Whitewater Mesa. Go past mile marker 3. On your left you will see a white house and a blue horse barn. Next you will see our brick house with lots of windows and a labyrinth sign hanging at the red metal gate. It is the second and last house, so if you find yourself driving up a second, even steeper winding road up into the mountains and arriving in Mogollon, a ghost mining town, you have gone too far.
A sign at the beginning of route 159 says “Unsafe for vehicles over 17 feet” A 24ft long goose-neck horse-trailer can be towed up and down the winding road. If you meet a large vehicle [unusual] be ready to back up if necessary. Watch out for cows, deer and javelina.
